Seminar 1
"Navigating the System: How Universities can
learn
from Aimhigher to make outreach count"
FACE Seminar: Wednesday 16th March, The Foresight Centre, University of Liverpool
Aimhigher Greater Merseyside is hosting this seminar to explore how the impact and legacy of Aimhigher can inform the new landscape of widening participation.
"Aimhigher has assisted universities and schools to learn a lot about what works in raising the aspirations of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, but we now need to use this knowledge to make much faster progress on social mobility." (David Willets 25th November 2010)
As we move into a new era, putting the emphasis on Higher Education institutions to deliver interventions that increase social mobility, it is vitally important to listen, hear and learn from successful and effective practice and build on this.

Call For Papers
We invite contributions to our 2011 annual conference in the form of papers and roundtable discussions. In both cases these may be research-based, practice-based, or a combination of both, but in all cases should exhibit good scholarship and be suitable for publication. A roundtable should consist of between 3 and 5 linked contributions, and will be allocated a longer slot for presentation equivalent to that for 4 papers. In the first instance, contributions should be submitted within one of the four broad themes of the conference.
The four key themes of the conference are:
1. Higher Education provision and its contribution to community development: contributions may be economic, social, health-related, environmental or cultural, or a combination of one or more of these. ‘Community’ in this context may vary from one small discrete group through to a whole region.
2. Aimhigher and its Legacy: whilst this is a particular concern in England, papers are invited also from other parts of the world where there are similar initiatives: these may take the form of reflective pieces from an external perspective.
3. The role of Qualifications Frameworks and Accreditation of Prior Llearning (APL) within community settings.
4. Universities and their regional and local role within contracting economies.

Call for Papers
Research in Post-Compulsory Education
Special Issue on Research and Lifelong Learning Networks
Research in Post-Compulsory Education, an international and fully-refereed journal, has issued a call for papers for a special issue of the journal on research and lifelong learning networks (LLNs). Contributions from across the UK will be welcome, as will those with an international perspective.
LLNs are designed to address the crucial issue of progression of under-represented groups, especially those in employment and on vocational courses, into and within higher education – from schools, colleges and workplaces. As the LLNs move into their final stage, the journal is concerned to showcase the breadth of research that has taken place into and within the networks and how that research has been turned into action. This special issue welcomes research based contributions in the following areas:
- The historical and wider context
- Different aspects of the Lifelong Learning Networks’ achievements
- Implications for practice and development in other contexts
- Good practice case studies
- Successes of Higher Education in Further Education Colleges
- Staff development
- Assessment methods
- Apprenticeships
- Sustaining, embedding and looking forward
The final deadline for articles is 24th June 2011, although contributors are encouraged to submit earlier. The editors are happy to discuss proposals informally. Submitted papers must follow the journal guidelines http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authors/edstylea.dot, and be sent as an email attachment to Amelia Rout a.c.rout@staffs.ac.uk.
