Research Funding from FACE

The FACE Research and Development Fund 2010 - Call For Proposals

FACE recognizes the crucial role that research plays in Access and Continuing Education. It also recognizes the challenges that members often face in identifying the resources to deliver such research, especially when funding streams are often focused narrowly on particular themes or topics. FACE can assist its members here through the annual FACE Research and Development Fund.

For the fourth year in succession FACE is able to support small pieces of research into Access and Continuing Education through its Research and Development Fund. In 2010 there will be 3 research grants available each with a value of £1500. This year we wish to support projects on the theme of:

‘Which way now for widening participation: the forces
that will shape progression in the next five years’

We would welcome proposals in any area related to this topic. Research may examine:

  • pedagogical developments
  • innovations in practice and their impact
  • work into the attitudes/behaviour of stakeholders, in particular future students and staff
  • institutional practices and their projected evolution
  • building future partnerships for lifelong learning and HE access
  • changes/trajectories in Higher Education policy or broader policy changes per se

The maximum value of a proposal should not exceed £1500. All proposers must be FACE members. Institutions/individuals can join FACE at any time.

Application Details

All proposals must:

  • Demonstrate that they will contribute to the organisations core commitment to social inclusion through the promotion of lifelong learning opportunities for all groups in society.
  • Focus on research placed in a theoretical context which would be suitable for possible future publication. The intention is not to support work which is primarily an evaluation report on a particular project. Proposals which focus on particular projects will be considered, but they must place the impact of the work in its wider theoretical/policy context and illustrate appropriate methodological rigour.
  • Lead to a final report/paper of between 3000 – 5000 words which has to be presented at the FACE Conference 30th June to 2nd July 2010 at Southampton Solent University.
  • Be presented at a seminar bringing together the work funded in the stream in the first part of the 2010-11 academic year.
  • Payment will be made on receipt of the full research publication and the submission of an approved invoice.

DOWNLOAD APPLICATION FORM

We would like to invite proposals for such research to be submitted via the proposal form attached. Proposals must be received to athertg@wmin.ac.uk by February 12th 2010 at 5.00 pm

If you have any enquiries regarding the Fund please contact Dr. Graeme Atherton on athertg@wmin.ac.uk Proposers will be informed by February 19th 2010 regarding the decision of the FACE Research and Development panel on their proposal.  Details of successful proposals will be posted on the FACE website.

Thank you Danny and very well done on the award.

By the way those of you that witnessed Danny's celebration on winning the raffle at the FACE annual conference a few years ago (see picture) can only imagine what is going to happen at the palace!
