News in Brief

Annual conference latest!

Professor Martin Hall, Vice Chancellor at the University of Salford will be giving the opening keynote address at this year’s FACE conference at the University of Ulster on the 4th July 2012. Professor Hall recently produced a stimulus paper for the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education entitled “Inequality and Higher Education: marketplace or social justice?” He will be drawing on this and also his experience at Salford and before this in South African Higher Education in his keynote speech to conference.

New Year Honour for Tony Acland

Tony Acland MBETony Acland, a long serving member of the FACE Executive and recently retired as Director of Aimhigher Hampshire and Isle of Wight, has been awarded an MBE.

Those of you who know Tony will also know of the tremendous contribution he has made, not only to FACE, but in each and every role he has had in Higher Education. It is no surprise therefore that the MBE was given in recognition of his services to HE with a strong emphasis, I would add, on access and widening participation.

So, many congratulations to Tony for this enormously deserved acknowledgment of his contribution to access and HE participation. We are hoping that Tony Acland MBE will continue on the FACE Executive so that we, in turn, can also continue to benefit from his experience and operational knowledge.

FACE Chair

Access to HE Summit Success

John Storan and Alan Milburn MPOn the 28th November 2011 in London, FACE joined forces with UUK, NUS, Action on Access, NIACE, HEA, ECU and AoC to organise the first annual Access to HE Summit. The Summit attracted delegates from throughout the Higher Education sector and beyond.

Many FACE members attended, and FACE had a stand at the Summit which received an enormous amount of attention from the large number of delegates attending.

Keynote speakers included: Rt. Hon. Alan Milburn MP, Nicola Dandridge, UUK Chief Executive; John Storan, FACE Chair, Director of Continuum, and Director of Action on Access; David Ruebain, ECU Chief Executive.

Throughout the day, there was also an impressive series of workshop sessions for delegates to participate in. The Summit not only provided a timely opportunity to take stock of the changes impacting on HE access, but it also explored the relationship between social mobility and access to HE.

The Summit partnership has agreed to make this an annual event, and plans for the 2012 Access to HE Summit are already underway. If you missed the Summit but would like to see and hear the keynote speeches, these can be found on the Action on Access website at www.actiononaccess.org.
