New publication from FACE now available

"Challenging Isolation: the role of lifelong learning"

Our latest publication combines both chapters from FACE-supported members research and development projects together with some of the most innovative and challenging papers from our 2008 annual conference to create a state of the art account of the ways lifelong learning developments can be seen to be challenging different forms of isolation. In common with previous FACE publications this latest volume includes contributions on lifelong learning from research, policy and practice perspectives drawn from different sectors across the UK as well as a number of international contexts. The book is organised into four major sections, empowering learners, work related learning, formalising the informal and the FACE development papers.

FACE members are able to purchase copies at a reduced member's price. There are limited numbers of this publication available so please send in your order as soon as possible to ensure your copy.

Executive members join NADE conference in USA

FACE Executive members Tony Acland and John Storan jointly represented FACE at the recent National Association for Developmental Education (NADE)  annual conference which took place in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA. FACE and NADE have a formal partnership agreement and this involves, in part, representatives from each of the networks attending each others' annual conferences. Those of you who attended last year's FACE conference in York may have met the President of NADE, Rosemary Karr, who attended and took part in the international panel session.

This year's NADE conference attracted almost 2,000 delegates from every part of the USA for four days of heavy duty conferencing, workshoping and social networking. It was as you might imagine an event on an enormous scale with individual workshop sessions sometimes having up to 100 participants! However, everyone was really friendly and appreciated Tony and John's involvement in the conference.

As well as meeting with the NADE governing committee to discuss and explore further links Tony and John also contributed to the international panel workshop session sharing views and information on educational transitions which was a central focus for the workshop. As a pilot exercise they also took part in a study visit organised through NADE to Greensboro College to meet staff and students and hear about their work related to widening participation and access. FACE will be looking to organise a similar study visit for the NADE delegation as part of their participation in the FACE annual conference this year's annual conference at Staffordshire University.

Conference Update - FACE 2009

Towards a New Agenda for Lifelong Learning:
Access, Diversity and Participation

1st -3rd July, Staffordshire University

The annual conference will soon be upon us, the first of July is not that far away and as we all know time flies when you are enjoying yourself. Preparations are well advanced for what looks to be a memorable and stimulating conference. Most of the keynotes have confirmed titles, we have accepted over 30 abstracts with a few more still pending. These will be posted on the website in due course.

Deadline for the submission of abstracts extended

We have also extended the abstract deadline to the 28th April although there is a possibility that we may well exceed capacity by that date . . . . so submit earlier as opposed to later to avoid disappointment. The breadth and quality of the abstracts received to date auger well for a truly memorable conference.

Those who have already submitted abstracts and workshop proposals will be informed of their slots over the next couple of weeks. Those of you who booked prior to the 28th February will be able to collect your free book at the conference unlike those of you who didn’t. However, given the growing list of exhibitors there will be no shortage of literature available to buy.

For the fashion conscious a very important factor at any conference is the conference bag. I have taken delivery of the 2009 conference bags and am rendered speechless by their elegance and panache. A little black number that has to be kept under lock and key it is so fashionable . . . . a must have item and only available at the FACE annual conference. They really are quite nice.

As always keep your eyes on the conference website for conference updates and see below the final call for papers for links.

Full conference details are available on the FACE CONFERENCE 2009 web page.

Registration can only be made online ONLINE REGISTRATION FOR FACE 2009

Abstracts can be submitted via the ONLINE ABSTRACT SUBMISSION FORM

Conference Organisor, Peter Jones 01782 294941 pete.jones@staffs.ac.uk

Nominated charity

At this time we are still awaiting confirmation but it is proposed that the nominated charity for the 2009 conference will be Action for Children.

The Chair's Countdown to Conference

Conference is just a matter of 95 days away!! One of the embarrassing things that happens to you as Chair is that you spend a lot of time reminding members and others to make sure and book for conference and then forget to do so yourself. Well not this year! My booking is done and I was delighted to get the free book which was a great touch and I am looking forward to reading it. This year's conference is certainly attracting a lot of interest. Perhaps now more than ever we need a serious debate about an agenda for lifelong learning and one which has access, diversity and participation at its heart. Arguably the need for a new agenda for lifelong learning has never been greater so be part of that new agenda and book for conference now to join us all in Staffordshire for the great debate.

On a less serious note - I should like to know if our e-bulletin editor Jim Tate is going to produce a new quiz for this years conference or not? If you haven't tried the old one, have a go at 2008 Conference Quiz   I did hear a rumour that he was thinking about preparing a new one so keep an eye on the FACE website to pit your wits against Jim's tantalizing teasers.
